The Minuteman Bikeway is a Millennium Trail, designated by the White House.

Coming Attractions

Two decades after its completion, the Minuteman Bikeway continues to inspire community-related improvements along its historic corridor — including these projects currently in the works:

Navigating the Minuteman Bikeway:  A DCR Grant to Improve User Information. contributed by Peggy Enders

Don’t know what those granite mile markers mean?  Think the intersection approaches on the Bikeway are dangerous for cars and Bikeway users?   How do you find the Bikeway if you’re riding up Mass Ave?  Why don’t folks say anything when they pass you?  In the spirit of improving the user experience on the Bikeway, a DCR Recreational Trails Program grant is funding a review of the Minuteman Bikeway on behalf of the towns of Arlington, Bedford and Lexington.  The town of Lexington is administering the grant on behalf of the three towns.

Toole Design Group (TDG) was hired last fall and began its review of current conditions on and near the 10-plus miles of the Bikeway.   A two-page questionnaire was distributed via email lists and newspaper stories to gather user opinions about trail signage (on and near the Bikeway), intersection crossings, and trailside amenities.  Last fall, a group of volunteers from the three towns inventoried existing signage and other amenities along and near the Bikeway using smart cameras to record images and locations.  Toole Design reports that they have received nearly 1,000 responses to the questionnaire and are in the process of assessing data received from the volunteers.  More recently, they are using a WikiMap survey tool to solicit feedback about popular Bikeway access points, troublesome intersections, etc. (the survey tool is no longer available).  TDG plans to do more as the weather improves to reach out to users on the Bikeway; the results of their study and the design plan will be submitted to the towns later this year.

Please review the Toole Design Group’s draft report (large File) Navigating the Minuteman Commuter Bikeway and submit your comments to webster@minutemanbikeway.org.

The grant is also underwriting most of the costs of producing a new Minuteman Bikeway map.  Russ Brami of Snowy Owl Maps is working with the three town bicycle advisory committees. View the map.
